World Environment Day, Monday 5th June
The Damascus Green Group installed this sign at lunch time on Monday 5th June, as a reminder to all students and staff with the message 'DON'T BE A LOSER, BE A RE-USER'.
It is amazing how many of these plastic snaplock bags are used every day. Each of these bags used in this installation were sourced last Friday from landfill bins around Damascus College. Well done Green Group.
The theme of World Environment Day 2017 is ‘Connecting People to Nature’. We’re encouraged to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance; and to think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it.
Last Friday, members of the Damascus Green Group went around the College collecting plastic snaplock bags from landfill bins. It didn’t take long to collect quite a supply. These form the basis of the display installed at lunch time on Monday for World Environment Day.
The beauty of nature can be shattered by the ubiquitous presence of plastic rubbish. One episode of the ABC’s recent series ‘War on Waste’ showed how this is now a global problem, even on the most remote, ‘pristine’ islands. But we can make a difference. By re-using snaplock bags, we reduce our consumption of them, and so cut the impact of the bags on landfill, or on the oceans.
A challenge to College families – how long can you go without the need to buy more snaplock bags, just by bringing them home each day, and re-using them?
